Description

One downloadable quilt design gets quilted in two different approaches in this amazing class by Judi Madsen.

The traditional approach includes feathers that are full of flow and design.

The modern approach utilizes straight-line designs filled with fabulous details.

Drawing the design is the first step, then marking the quilt so it is ready for free-motion quilting. Judi demonstrates exactly where and how to begin, walking through each step of the quilting.

Learn how to make not-so-ordinary feathers, loops, double loops, a circle in a circle, swirls, pebbles, and other fills to enhance your quilts.

Create one traditionally quilted piece and then one with a distinctively modern edge…all in one class!

For your convenience, this class can be purchased for online viewing or purchased on DVD.

I own Judi’s book and really like it, so I had high hopes for this class. Unfortunately, it just did not live up to my expectations.
The camera work made it difficult to see what Judi was doing during the marking process, and Judi seemed to often be at a loss for words to describe what is very much a non-verbal process. This combination made the marking portion of the class difficult to watch and comprehend.
She seemed to become much more comfortable when she began talking about the different Motifs she was using, and she is a pro at the white board.
While I got to see Judi design her quilting for this particular quilt, I never gained an understanding of how she would design any other quilt. I believe this probably has more to do with the editing than with Judi’s instruction, although she seemed tense in a studio setting, which is very understandable.

First, Judi is a wonderful quilter and has great ideas, beautiful work and patterns to show…BUT, I think this course is more just watching someone quilt. For the cost of this course, I’d prefer seeing Judi show us (slower!!) how to mark the quilts and show more quilting designs/marking. She does show both the modern and traditional quilt marking but it’s so fast it’s hard to keep up…even stopping and starting the videos.
It was/is interesting when she went to the white board and demo’d some of the designs.

You are an amazing designer and I have learned so much. Thank you.

Love this class. Judie is an amazing teacher. Learned a lot from her

I love Judi’s quilting, and have taken several classes with her. I enjoy the iquilt classes because I can watch them over and over. She is an excellent teacher and I appreciate how she breaks the design down so that it is doable for a non-pro.

I have purchased all three of Judi Madsen’s courses, and have learned so much from them. It has improved my confidence and skills as a long arm quilter.

  7. Christa French (verified owner)

I learn so much from Judi’s classes. Her explanation of the importance of each step is superb.

I have this course on DVD and it has completely changed how I quilt and how I think about quilting. Judi’s methods are complex, but completely doable. I love that the whole thing is on a long arm. It’s hard to find true long arm quilting courses. I have changed how I start and stop, how many times I start and stop, I am no longer afraid to travel and I am having so much fun incorporating secondary designs in my quilts now. I am also charging more money for my quilting because I have improved so much and I actually spend less time trying to figure things out then before. Thanks Judi! Love your courses, books and everything. You are gifted!!!

beautiful work! great design and balance . explanation is precise. I learned many little tricks , thank you. a drawing of your lines would be helpful so when we go to practice there is a reference guide. looking forward to more of you classes.

Really love Judi’s work and the class is good. What I think it needs is another PDF with diagrams of the quilts as drawing showing the stitches and designs are in all the sections. Sometimes it is very hard to tell what goes where. It would make it so much easier to glance at the diagram and see for sure that you have it right.

I really loved this class! I will be using the things I learned for many quilts to come!

I followed along using my domestic sewing machine and loved the class. I haven’t done such extensive marking for a very long time. Loved the result but would have appreciated a download of the design. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to transfer the skills to my own work so a week after completing the samples, I experimented with a lap quilt I’m planning to donate. It came out beautiful! I’ve been piecing and quilting for a very long time but my skills improved dramatically after this class. Judy, more classes please.

If you are new to longarming and love Judi’s style, you will love this course. She is a wonderful quilter, but does not explain what she is doing in detail and why. You will be able to replicate these two quilts and you will learn along the way. I just wish she would have given lots more information about what she was doing and why. For instance, she didn’t say if we should complete the whole outer border before moving on to the inside or if we should complete all of the quilt that is accessible before rolling on to the rest of it. The editing left out some of the important aspects such as quilting feathers in the corner of the quilt.

  14. Jacque Ervin (verified owner)

I agree with what other people have said, much time spent on actually marking the quilt and not enough time on explaining how she came up with the designs. Especially in the modern quilt why did she do the side triangles, etc. I think after seeing her mark the quilt for one line skip to all done unless you are going to explain the design principles. For me this was a waste of my time and money, and did not entice me to buy her book at all!

Enjoyed the class tho I personally seldom mark a quilt. Perhaps I’ll try it on one of my own and get over that fear. A very calm and confident instructor always makes a difference. Glad to know mine isn’t the only machine that dislikes a direction. Sure enjoyed seeing the solution to stop catching the ruler base on the clamps…looks easy to re-create.

  16. Lisa Wagner (verified owner)

I would MUCH rather have had her go more into the process of how she came up with the design than the actual marking. Honestly, I expected more and I was bored with this class. I really love her quilting and would have loved to hear how she looks at a quilt and decides HOW to quilt it.

I like Judi’s approach to quilting (say-la-vee), but I was hoping to achieve more out of this particular class. It was nice to quilt along with her during each step of the way, but the class didn’t actually TEACH me what to do with future quilts. None of the “whys” were ever addressed; it was more like a “this-is-what-I-do” approach and no explanations were given as to why. Did I have fun? You bet. Did I learn anything? I’m sorry to say, not much.

This week I took my quilting experience to a whole other level with this course. I finally feel like I am on my way to be the quilter that I set out to be. This course gave me the confidence that I was needing. It showed me that I CAN do it. I like the way the videos are detailed and easy to follow. I can’t wait to try these techniques on the next quilt. I wish there was a place here to show my end results from this course.

  19. Linn Buell (verified owner)

Excellent class! I put both quilts on my long arm frame at the same time and worked on them side by side. I went back to the video presentation often for info review. It was good practice, especially the ruler work which I am very interested in.

While I have been fm quilting for about 3 years now, attended several of Judi’s seminars in Utah at HMQS and have her book, I still benefited greatly from taking this course. I have been wanting to do a feather border for some time, but either didn’t have the right quilt or was just too intimidated. I love the way Judi broke it down into simple steps and provided tips to explain and clarify her approach. It really came together for me and I felt better equipped to take the plunge and put a border feather on my current quilt! Count me in for any further instruction and insight Judi comes up with, keep it coming!

  21. Janette Chilver (verified owner)

I guess I may have expected too much from the class as I love Judis work and have admired it for a long time and although I think I would have definitely benefitted from this class at an earlier stage of my learning process. I don’t think I learned anything in this class based on my experience level so I think if you’ve been quilting already for a few years and know Judis work then you won’t benefit from taking this class at all.

  22. Patricia Hechler (verified owner)

fantastic course with great video feed. I loved your pointers and was especially pleased to see you baste this way. Thank you so much for taking all that time to produce a very nice production. This was my first project outside of a piece of doodle fabric and what I was able to produce was amazing. You are really helping me to fast-track as much as physically possible!

  23. Carol Muller (verified owner)

I’ve really enjoyed the class. I’m a fairly new Longarmer, and learned some very helpful tips which I will be using from now on!

  24. Leeanne Hopper (verified owner)

Gosh Judi…………THANK YOU! I have always wanted to take classes with you but as I am way down in New Zealand it is a bit tricky. I have your book and love it! I sure hope you will do more on line classes for folks like me that aren’t very good ocean swimmers!! Best wishes, Leeanne of Quiltmekiwi.blogspot.com

  25. Elizabeth Sevy (verified owner)

Thank you! I enjoyed watching your process. I have done and enjoy ruler work, but always felt I needed more info on how to use fillers. Especially felt the info on stopping and starting, as well as how to break the project into sections was helpful. I believe that I am a quilter that will benefit from marking my top! Thank you for sharing your style. I will keep the motto – consistent not perfect is the goal. Oh, and practice, practice, practice.

The class was a good path to detailed stitching. It could have been improved by editing some of the redundant scenes of stitching.

  27. Patrice Rine (verified owner)

As expected this is a wonderful course. I had the privilege of taking a hands on class with Judy last year and loved her, her class content and her style of teaching. I highly recommend class! Good Job!

  28. Peggy Carstens (verified owner)

I liked seeing the difference between traditional and modern quilting. And I really like the ruler work with the different fills. Thanks for a great class.

  29. Donna Taylor (verified owner)

Great class. I am an experienced free motion quilter on a domestic machine but new to longarm quilting so everything in the class was helpful to me. It would have been nice to get more info on the markers you use, like brand name etc. as I am new to marking quilts.

  30. Tami Moore (verified owner)

Very clear and helpful advice on utilizing space and choosing designs. Great tips on the mechanics of using rulers, marking and moving the machine. I can’t wait to try the exercises presented in the class, but first I need to finish what I have loaded on my machine, as I have been inspired to add to my original design. Luckily, I had only just started stitching in the ditch, I can still do changes easily :).

Judi, I have always been amazed at your quilting and wondered how you plan then execute the beautiful quilting. This class is very helpful in giving me the big picture then breaking down each step. I found myself pausing the video then trying out the motif and if struggling, rewinding the class and watching you do it again. The most wonderful part of this class is that you make it seem like the everyday quilter like me can actually learn to do this quilting. Thank you for this class and I look forward to more of them! You are an inspiration!

Thank you for this class. Judy you are a wonderful teacher.

  33. Diana Wilson (verified owner)

Thank you for doing such a awesome job teaching this class. My brain is just bubbling over with ideas now. I’m fairly new to longarm quilting and this class has given me a new approach to quilting designs and how to accomplish what is in my head.
