Must-Try Trends: Mug Rugs

We’re celebrating our 35th anniversary here at American Quilter’s Society, and it has us looking back at the trends that have shaped the quilting world and the trends of the moment fueling the future of quilting. This month, we’re trying Mug Rugs.

This is the last Must-Try Trend of 2019. We’re already scouting out what trends will storm the quilting world in 2020, but to round out this year, we wanted to try a trend that can do it all! Mug rugs come in all shapes and sizes. They are generally larger than a coaster, often rectangular, and can be made in any style. Mug rugs are meant to fit a mug or two and maybe a sweet treat, perfect for morning coffee and a donut stick, tea and biscuits, or hot cocoa and cookies.

How to Try This Trend

Choose a size.

Mug rugs can range from 4″ x 6″ all the way up to 8″ x 12″ depending on personal preference. Grab some paper and cut it out a size you think you’ll like. Test it out in the location you’ll use your mug rug. Place your mug on it. Really channel your inner Goldilocks until you find a size that’s just right.

Select a style.

This is where the magic of mug rugs comes in. They are the perfect size for experimenting with new styles and techniques in a bite-sized project. We have some ideas below based on past Must-Try Trends!

You can even make a traditional square block and add an extra row to either side to make it rectangular.

Add finishing touches.

After making the top of the mug rug you can finish it like a mini quilt by layering it with backing and batting, quilting, and then binding it. Or you can finish it like a coaster, just Click Here for instructions.
