Last week we looked at some traditional Chain block variations. If you missed it, click here to visit the post. When things start to get uneven in the world of Chain blocks, the larger squares are often called knots. This week, let’s explore Knots & Chain block variations.
Chain & Knot or the Four-Patched Nine Patch

Cutting Instructions
From the background fabric cut:
(8) 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ squares
(4) 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ squares
From the chain fabric, cut:
(8) 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ squares
(1) 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ squares
Block Assembly
Sew a background 1 1/2″ square to a chain 1 1/2″ square. Make 8.
Sew these units together alternating them to make a Four Patch. Make 4.
Layout the remaining pieces in rows using the block image above as a guide.
Sew the rows together.
Block measures 12 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ square.
Uneven Nine Patch Chain
8″ x 8″
Cutting Instructions
From the background fabric, cut:
(4) 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ rectangles
(4) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles
From the chain fabric, cut:
(4) 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ squares
(5) 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ squares
Block Assembly
Using the chain 1 1/2″ squares and a chain 2 1/2″ square with the background 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ rectangles, layout the center Uneven Nine Patch into three rows. Sew the rows together. Uneven Nine Patch measures 4 1/2″ square.
Sew a background 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangle to opposite sides of the previous unit. Sew a chain 2 1/2″ square to each end a background 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangle. Sew to the top and bottom of the previous unit.
Block measures 8 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ square.
Knots & Chain
12″ x 12″
Cutting Instructions
From the background fabric, cut:
(4) 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ squares
(8) 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ rectangles
(4) 3 1/2 x 6 1/2″ rectangles
From the chain fabric, cut:
(9) 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ squares
(4) 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ squares
Block Assembly
Using the five chain 2 1/2″ squares and the background 2 1/2″ squares, layout the center Nine Patch into three rows. Sew the rows together to complete the center Nine Patch.
Center Nine Patch measures 6 1/2″ square.
Sew a background 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ rectangle to one side of each of the remaining chain 2 1/2″ squares. Make 4.
Sew a background 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ rectangle to one side of each of the chain 1 1/2″ squares. Make 4.
Sew one of each of these units together to make an Uneven Four Patch as shown in the block. Make 4.
Uneven Four Patch measures 3 1/2″ square.
Sew the background 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles to sides of the Center Nine Patch. Sew an Uneven Four Patch to each end of the remaining background 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles. Sew these to the top and bottom of the block center to complete the block
Block measures 12 1/2″ square.
