Red & White Star Blocks
Units C & D
Using pieces red C1, white C2, white C3, red C4, white C5, and white C6 Foundation Paper Piece Unit C. Make 16.
Using pieces red D1, white D2, white D3, red D4, white D5, and red D6 Foundation Paper Piece Unit D. Make 16.
Sew D to C as shown above to complete the corner unit for the Red Star blocks. Make 16.
Using pieces white C1, red C2, red C3, white C4, red C5, and red C6 Foundation Paper Piece Unit C. Make 36.
Using pieces white D1, red D2, red D3, white D4, red D5, and white D6 Foundation Paper Piece Unit D. Make 36.
Sew D to C as shown above to complete the corner unit for the White Star blocks. Make 36.
Units A & B
Using red A1, red A2, white A3, red A4, white A5, red A6, white A7, and red A8 Foundation Paper Piece Unit A. Make 16.
Using white B1, red B2, white B3, red B4, white B5, red B6, and white B7 Foundation Paper Piece Unit B. Make 16.
Sew A to B as shown above to complete the valley unit for the Red Star blocks. Make 16.
Using white A1, white A2, red A3, white A4, red A5, white A6, red A7, and white A8 Foundation Paper Piece Unit A. Make 36.
Using red B1, white B2, red B3, white B4, red B5, white B6, and red B7 Foundation Paper Piece Unit B. Make 36.
Sew A to B as shown above to complete the valley unit for the White Star blocks. Make 36.
Block Assembly
Sew a valley unit to each side of the center square to complete the center row of the block.
Sew a corner unit to each side of a valley unit to complete the top row of the block. Repeat to make the bottom row.
Sew the rows together to complete the block as shown below.
  
Blocks measure 12 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ unfinished. Make 9 with white stars with red background and 4 red stars and white background.
Sashing
Red Side Sashing Block
Using red E1, red E2, and white E3 Foundation Paper Piece Unit E. Make 56. (Set aside 16 for White Side Sashing Block.)
Using red F1, white F2, and red F3 Foundation Paper Piece Unit F. Make 36. (Set aside 16 for White Side Sashing Block.)
Sew a Unit E to each side of Unit F as shown above.
Block measures 4 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ unfinished. Make 20.
White Side Sashing Block
Using white E1, red E2, and white E3 Foundation Paper Piece White Side Unit E. Make 16.
Sew Unit E from the Red Side Sashing Block to one side of Unit F. Sew a White Side Unit E to the other side as shown above.
Block measures 4 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ unfinished. Make 16.
Quilt Assembly
Layout the quilt as shown below. Sew the blocks and sashing into diagonal rows.
Sew the setting and corner triangles onto the ends of the rows shown below.
Sew the rows together to complete the quilt center. Trim the setting and corner triangles. They are oversized to allow for accurate trimming.
Measure the quilt center in three locations and average to attain border measurement. Trim the (2) 1 1/2″ x 69″ borders to fit this measurement. Sew to the sides of the quilt center. Press and measure again.
Use the average measurement to trim the (2) 1 1/2″ x 72″ borders. Sew to the top and bottom of the quilt center. Press and measure again.
Use the average measurement to trim the (2) 3″ x 72″ borders. Sew to the sides of the quilt. Press and measure again.
Use the average measurement to trim the (2) 3″ x 77″ borders. Sew to the sides of the quilt. Press.
Layer with batting and backing and quilt as desired. Bind.
