Fabric Requirements

Heart fabric – 1 3/4 yards (or 81 charms – 5″ x 5″ squares)
Sashing Squares fabric – 1/4 yard
Heart Background fabric – 1 1/2 yards
Sashing Strips fabric – 1 yard
Setting Blocks fabric – 1/2 yard
Border fabric – 1 yard

Note: If you use the same Heart Background, Sashing Strips, Setting Blocks, and Border fabric as shown here, it totals 3 1/2 yards.

Cutting Instructions

From the heart fabric, cut:
(162) 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ rectangles
(81) 3 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles

From the sashing squares fabric, cut:
(144) 1″ x 1″ squares

From the heart background fabric, cut:
(324) 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ squares
(162) 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ squares

From the sashing strip fabric, cut:
(264) 1″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles

From the setting block fabric, cut:
(40) 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ squares

From the border fabric, cut:
(6) 4 1/2″ x width of fabric

Heart Blocks

Flying Geese

Mark the wrong side of the heart background 1½” squares diagonally once. Lay a marked square on the corner of a heart 1½” x 2½” rectangle and sew on the marked line. Trim a quarter inch from the marked line and press. Repeat the process with a heart background 1½” square on the other end of the triangle.

Unit measures 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ rectangle. Make 2 per heart block. (162 total)

Sew two Flying Geese units together side by side as shown below.

Unit measures 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangle. Make 1 per heart block. (81 total)

Flip Units

Mark the wrong side of a heart background 2 1/2″ square diagonally once. Lay a marked square on the corner of a heart 3 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangle and sew on the marked line. Trim a quarter inch from the marked line and press. Repeat with another heart background 2 1/2″ square on an adjacent corner as shown below.

Unit measures 3 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangle. Make 1 per block. (81 total)

Block Assembly

Sew the Flying Geese section to the top of the Flip section as shown below to make a heart block.

Block measures 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ square.

Quilt Assembly

Lay out the blocks along with the 4 1/2″ setting squares into rows as shown below. Sew each row together with a 1″ x 4 1/2″ sashing strip between each block and on each end of the row. Make all 11 rows.

Sashing Rows

Sew twelve 1″ sashing square and eleven 1″ x 4 1/2″ sashing strips together alternating as shown below.
Make 12 sashing rows.

Quilt Center

Layout the rows to be certain they are in the right order. Sew the sashing and block rows together as shown above to complete the quilt center.

Borders

Sew the border strips together to make the following lengths:

(2) 4 1/2″ x 50 1/2″
(2) 4 1/2″ x 58 1/2″

Sew a 4 1/2″ x 50 1/2″ strip to each side of the quilt.
Sew a 4 1/2″ x 58 1/2″ strip to the top and bottom of the quilt.

Layer with batting and backing. Quilt as desired and bind.
