Week Five: Creating a Garden
Quilting and gardening go hand in hand, so it was no surprise that the subject of gardens came up as we discussed The Quilt Story project. For each of us, gardening means something a little different. For some it is about lessons learned, for others flowers represent a time of healing or replenishing, and for you it may be something completely different. In so many ways, quilting teaches and heals us, so of course, we want to add flower gardens to our quilts.
Here are a few 4″ blocks to inspire you:
Tulip
For each tulip block, cut:
1 – 2½” x 1½” background rectangle
3 – 3″ x 3″ background squares
1 – 1½” x 1½” background squares
3 – 3″ x 3″ flower squares
1 – 2½” x 2½” flower square
1 – 1½” x 1½” accent flower square
Pansy
For each pansy block, cut:
2 – 2″ x 2″ background squares, cut in half diagonally once
1 – 2″ x 2″ petal square (need 4 total), cut in half diagonally once
2 – 1½” x 1½” petal squares (need 4 sets total)
1 – 2″ x 2″ yellow square
Lily
1 – 2½” x 2½” background square
2 – 2″ x 2″ background squares
2 – 2″ x 2″ petal squares
2 – 2½” x 1½” petal rectangles
1 – 3″ x 3″ petal square, cut in half diagonally once
1 – 3″ x 3″ flower base square, cut in half diagonally once
Add borders to the blocks to include favorite quotes, important words of wisdom, or cherished memories to your garden blocks.
For these blocks, add a 1/2″ inner border and 1″ outer border (finished sizes).
Use these flowers, create your own, or plan your garden in a completely different way.
