In 2020, we’re counting down to Christmas all year long with this beautiful quilt. Each of the 25 sampler blocks are inspired by a unique snowflake. Repeat your favorites or make them all.
At the beginning of each month, two blocks will be available with detailed instructions and any paper patterns needed. Make the blocks using your preferred method. Foundation paper piecing patterns are available for some of the more challenging units.
Be sure to share your progress in the AQS Christmas Countdown group on Facebook.

Measure the outside dashed line of a square unit for printing size accuracy: the square should be 4″ x 4″ from dashed line to dashed line.
Use teal and dark sky fabrics to make the setting blocks following the foundation paper piecing square patterns. Trim on the dashed line, 4″ square. Make 64.
Sew the four units together to complete a setting block as shown below:
Remove the paper at this point. Block measures 7 1/2″ x 7 1/2″ unfinished. Make 16 setting blocks.
For the setting triangles along the edges, paper piece 16 square units. Paper piece 16 B triangle units and 16 C triangle units.
Sew an A, B and square unit together to make a setting triangle as shown below.
Make 16 setting triangles. Do not remove the paper until the setting is complete.
For the corner triangles, paper piece 4 B triangle units and 4 C triangle units.
Sew the B and C units together for the setting corner triangles as shown below.
Make 4 corner triangles. Do not remove the paper until the setting is complete.
Sashing
From the teal fabric, cut:
(100) 1 1/2″ x 7 1/2″ rectangles
(40) 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ squares
(10) 2″ x 2″ squares, cut in half once diagonally
Sew sashing rectangles between the blocks. Sew the blocks into rows.
Sew the sashing rectangles and squares together to make the sashing rows. Sew the sashing triangles to the ends of the sashing rows.
Sew the rows together to complete the quilt center. Trim the edge triangles if needed.
Borders
Cut strips from width of fabric and sew together to make border strips appropriate length.
To determine the actual length of each border, measure the width of the quilt top in three places and use the average for the length of the border.
Upper measurement + Middle measurement + Lower measurement = X
X / 3 = Length to cut your borders
Teal Inner Border
Make (2) 1 1/2″ X 60″
Trim to average measurement and sew to the sides of the quilt center.
Make (2) 1 1/2″ x 62″
Trim to average measurement and sew to the top and bottom of the quilt center.
White Middle Border
Make (2) 1″ x 62″
Trim to average measurement and sew to the sides of the quilt top.
Make (2) 1″ x 64″
Trim to average measurement and sew to the top and bottom of the quilt top.
Teal Outer Border
Make (2) 4″ x 64″
Trim to average measurement and sew to the sides of the quilt top.
Make (2) 4″ x 70″
Trim to average measurement and sew to the top and bottom of the quilt top.
Layer with batting and backing. Quilt as desired and bind.
