Quilt 2018: Baltimore Album Quilts

The AQS Quilt 2018 project for November is Baltimore Album!

At the beginning of the year, you made a list of all the quilt making techniques you’d like to try in 2018 and put them in a jar. Then, you chose your own personal color of the year. You are ready!

If you missed last month’s project, check it out. We created Two-Block quilts.

Our style for this month is Baltimore Album. Baltimore Album quilts feature applique blocks set together. Often the blocks are all different and feature a floral or motif design. It is typical for a pieced border encircling the blocks.

Let’s take a look…

Theme-based Baltimore Album

Baltimore Rhapsody – Symphony by Teresa Rawson features a musical theme with treble and bass clefs adorning the applique border. Fifteen of the blocks feature symphony instruments with another block in the corner hosting the conductor. This quilt was featured in the AQS 2015 Catalogue of Show Quilts.

Floral Baltimore Album

Floral Baltimore by Hana Joo features floral motifs of wreaths and baskets. Some of the blocks mimic their symmetrical partner, but no two blocks are exactly alike. This quilt was featured in the AQS 2015 Catalogue of Show Quilts.

Alternate Layout

Kansas Album quilt by the Feather Album Group of Tampa, Florida showcases a medallion-style layout with a variety of floral and motif blocks. This quilt was featured in the AQS 2017 Fall Paducah Catalogue of Show Quilts.

Traditional Red & Green Colorway

Forever Baltimore by Linda Feikema features traditional red and green colors with single fabric motifs in the corners. This quilt was featured in the AQS 2018 Fall Paducah Catalogue of Show Quilts.

New Styles

Funky Garden in Red by Janet Elia shows off a vivid red background with colorful flowers in a lighter value. This quilt was featured in the AQS 2015 Catalogue of Show Quilts.

We’ve shown you some amazing Baltimore Album quilts. What kind of blocks would you create for a Baltimore Album quilt?

Draw a technique from your jar, think about clever ways to play with your color of the year, and start creating.

Next week, we will dive into block design.

Give us a shout in the comments below letting us know your technique of choice or share with us on our Facebook group AQS Project Parade.

Let’s get started!
