How to Make Templates from Paper Piecing Patterns

If Foundation Paper Piecing isn’t your cup of tea, and you’re curious about turning paper piecing patterns to templates, follow these quick and easy steps to get sewing in no time!

Step One: Prepare Paper Piecing Pattern

Print out your pattern. Cut off the seam allowances, then cut the pattern pieces apart. If you pattern isn’t labeled, label the pieces before cutting apart.

Step Two: Trace Template

Place the right side of the template face down on the wrong side of the fabric, as shown below. Trace around the template. This is the sewing line.

 

Using the sewing line as a guide, measure a 1/4″ from the sewing line and draw the seam allowances. Cut out along the seam allowance lines.

 

Method Two: Rotary Cutting

Place the right side of the template face down on the wrong side of the fabric. Using a ruler, measure a 1/4″ from the edge of the template and cut away the extra fabric.

Make the points where the template needs to meet up with the other pieces. This makes the pieces easier to join. Simply use a pin to match the dots along the sides.

Now you are ready to machine sew the pieces together.
