Big Block Pattern: Sunshine & Rainbows

Make this fun 27″ block. Sure to add a smile to your day, this sunny traditional block has a new sparkle.

So grab your rotary cutter and let’s get started!

Block Size

27″ finished (27 1/2″ unfinished block size)

Fabric Requirements

We used some our beloved American Jane scraps.

Yellow Sun – 1/2 yard

Rainbows –  3″ x 15″ scraps of four different colors

Center – 4″ square scrap

Background – 3/4 yard

Cutting Instructions

1-fabric

Yellow Sun –

4 – 6 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ squares

4 – 7″ x 7″ squares

Rainbows –

1 – 2″ x 15″ strip from four different fabrics

Center –

1 – 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ square

Background –

4 – 6 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ squares

4 – 7″ x 7″ squares

4 – 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles

Assembly Instructions

  1. Mark a line down the center of the back of the 7″ x 7″ white squares. Mark a line 1/4″ on each side of the center line.

  2. Layer a 7″ x 7″ sunshine square with a 7″ x 7″ marked white square, right sides together. Sew down the two outer lines on the background square.

  3. Cut the half squares apart on the center line.

  4. Press the half square open and evenly trim the block to 6 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ square.

    Make four.
  5. Sew the units made in the previous step to the  6 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ white and sunshine squares as shown below.

  6. Sew the units made in the previous step together, as shown below.

  7. Sew the 2″ x 15″ colored strips together and trim cut them into 3 1/2″ segments.

  8. Sew the segment made in the previous step to the 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ background rectangle as shown below.

  9. Sew the block units into rows and sew the block together.
