Making a Quilt Sandwich

Lay the backing down on a flat surface, wrong side up. Place the batting in the center of the backing. Center the quilt on top of the batting right side up. Baste with spray, pins, large stitches, or any other method you prefer.

Select a Quilting Design

As you select or create a quilting design, it’s important to keep your machine in mind. Straight lines and gentle curves lend themselves to a walking foot.

Quilting designs with dramatic curves and fluid lines lend themselves to freemotion quilting. If your machine can drop its feed dogs and you have a hopping foot, you can freemotion quilt on your home machine.

Here’s a video on setting up your home machine for freemotion quilting.

And of course, hand quilting goes great with quilt as you go. Traditional hand quilting brings elegance to every design, and more modern big stitching brings a lot of whimsy and playfulness. Click here for a big stitch quilting tutorial!

Factor these options into your creative choices for your quilting designs. Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s take a look at some ideas for quilting Daybreak.

Daybreak Quilting Ideas

In a quilt with as much structure in it as Daybreak, there are so many ways to emphasize the piecing with quilting. You can use all kinds of curves and fills, but you can create a lot of visual impact with straight lines. Experiment with echoing shapes, creating segmentation that isn’t in the piecing, and density of quilting to emphasize different areas. Straight line designs are easy to quilt on a machine by using a walking, or they can be quilted by hand.

Varied grids are a great way to quilt something quickly without drawing much attention to the quilting. But they’re also a great building block. In the larger squares of open space, you could use different fills, large motifs, or even echo with smaller squares. The possibilities are endless!

This design is a traditional orange peel motif. Orange Peel is a popular and classic fill quilting design of interlocking circles. This design can be used to fill specific areas or as an all-over design as shown above. This kind of design is great for freemotion quilting or quilting by hand.
