Fabric Requirements:
Cream — 4 3/4 yards
Dark Eggplant — 3 1/2 yards
Dark Fuchsia — 1 yard
Binding — 5/8 yard
Backing — 4 2/3 yards
Cutting Instructions:
From the cream fabric, cut:
(50) 5″ x 5″ squares
(80) 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ squares
(48) 5 1/4″ x 5 1/4 squares
(12) 2 7/8″ x 2 7/8″ squares
(12) 4 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ rectangles
(8) 12 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles
(8) strips 3 1/2″ x Width of Fabric (WOF) pieced together and subcut into:
(2) 3 1/2″ x 70 1/2″
(2) 3 1/2″ x 76 1/2″
From the dark eggplant fabric, cut:
(50) 5 ″ x 5” squares
(13) 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ squares
(48) 6 1/2″ x 4″ rectangles
(24) 4″ x 4″ squares, cut once on the diagonal
(27) 5 1/4″ x 5 1/4″ squares
(7) strips 1 1/2″ x WOF pieced together and subcut into:
(2) 1 1/2″ x 68 1/2″
(2) 1 1/2″ x 70 1/2″
From the dark fuchsia fabric, cut:
(12) 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ squares
(24) 5 1/4″ x 5 1/4″ squares
From the binding fabric, cut:
(8) strips 2 1/2″ x WOF
Assembly:
Shoo Fly Block
Mark on the wrong side of a 5″ cream square on the diagonal once. Layer right sides together with a 5″ dark eggplant square and sew a quarter inch from both sides of the marked line. Cut apart and press to the eggplant. Trim to 4 1/2″ square. Make 52 half square triangles (HSTs).

Use two HSTs and a cream 4 1/2″ square to make the row shown below. Make 26 rows.
Use two cream 4 1/2″ squares and a dark eggplant 4 1/2″ square to make the row shown below. Make 13 rows.
Assemble rows as shown to make 13 Shoo Fly blocks.
Shoo Fly blocks measure 12 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ unfinished.
Gentleman’s Fancy Block
Mark on the wrong side of a 5″ cream square on the diagonal once. Layer right sides together with a 5″ dark eggplant square and sew a quarter inch from both sides of the marked line. Cut apart and press to the eggplant. Trim to 4 1/2″ square. Make 52 half square triangles (HSTs).

Mark on the wrong side of a 5 1/4″ cream square on the diagonal once. Layer right sides together with a 5 1/4″ dark eggplant square and sew a quarter inch from both sides of the marked line. Cut apart and press to the eggplant. Repeat with a 5 1/4″ cream square and a 5 1/4″ dark fuchsia square. Mark the backs of two of the half square triangles from corner to corner crossing the seam. Layer two half square triangles right sides together with the creams opposite of each other using the diagram below to orient the colors.
Sew a 1/4″ on both sides of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line.
Trim to 4 1/2″ square. Make 48 quarter square triangles. (QST)

Use two HSTs and a QST to make the row shown below. Make 24 rows.
Use two QSTs and a dark fuchsia 4 1/2″ square to make the row shown below. Make 12 rows.
Assemble rows as shown below to make 12 Gentlemen’s Fancy blocks.
Gentlemen’s Fancy blocks measure 12 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ unfinished.
Sew the Shoo Fly blocks and the Gentlemen’s Fancy blocks together in rows alternating as shown below.
Pieced Border
Flying Geese
Mark the wrong sides of twelve 2 7/8″ cream squares. Layer two marked squares RST on a 5 1/4″ dark eggplant square. Sew a quarter inch from both sides of the marked line. Cut apart and press to the eggplant. Layer another marked square over the eggplant from the previous unit. Sew a quarter inch from both sides of the marked line and cut apart, pressing to the eggplant.
Sew the Flying Geese unit to a 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ cream rectangle. Sew a 4 1/2″ cream square to each side of the Flying Geese/rectangle unit.
Make 12.
Using four 12 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ cream rectangles and six of the Flying Geese/rectangle unit, make 2 side rows and sew them to each side of the quilt center.
Using the remaining 4 1/2″ cream squares, 12 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ cream rectangles, and Flying Geese/rectangle units to make the top and bottom rows. Sew them to the top and bottom of the quilt center.
Floating Border & Outer Border
Sew the 1 1/2″ x 68 1/2″ dark eggplant borders to the sides. Sew the 1 1/2″ x 70 1/2″ dark eggplant borders to the top and bottom.
Se the 3 1/2″ x 70 1/2″ cream borders to the sides. Sew the 3 1/2″ x 76 1/2″ cream borders to the top and bottom.
Layer with batting and backing, quilt as desired, and bind.
