- Take one of the printed foundation paper piecing templates and trim away the outer edges on the guidelines. Use tape to tape the papers together to make one complete acorn template.

- Cut and label all pieces of fabrics for easier piecing.

- Separate each section of the paper piecing pattern, being careful not to cut inside the outer lines of each section.

- Begin with the acorn body section of the printed template that is labeled A1-A8. Place it with the printed side face down on the light source (light box, window, etc.). Take one of the Fabric A1 medium brown pieces of fabric that you cut and one of the Fabric A2 medium brown pieces that you cut.

- Using the glue stick, place a small amount of glue inside the lines of A1 on the paper pattern—on the wrong side of the paper (I traced a line using the light box onto the blank side of the paper to show placement). Placing the paper on the light source will help you be able to see the lines and where to put the glue. Place the Fabric A1 piece right side up over where you placed the small amount of glue. You should be able to see the outline on A1 through the wrong side of the paper and the right side of the fabric. Make sure that the placement of Fabric A1 is 1/4″ over the lines of A1 on the paper—this will be the seam allowance.

- Using the light box to see the lines of A1, place a small line of Elmer’s school glue outside the left A1 boundary line, within 1/4″ of the line.

- Take one Fabric A2 medium brown piece and place it wrong side up, with the diagonal edge following the glue line you just made. The diagonal edge should be 1/4″-3/8” from the A1 boundary line (this will be the seam allowance).

- Take the pieces to the pressing board and lightly press the edges where the glue line is for 2-3 seconds to set the glue.

- Take the paper pattern to the Memory Craft 9400QCP and use the standard foot A. Decrease the stitch length to 1.5.
[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”48782″ img_size=”medium” onclick=”link_image” image_hovers=”false”][vc_column_text]The stitch length is decreased so the paper is perforated more during sewing. This will make it easier to tear the paper away from the stitching at the end.
- Turn the paper pattern to the right side (the fabrics will be facing down), and begin sewing with the shortened stitch length outside the outer box on the paper pattern. Then sew directly on the lower right line that is shared between sections A1 and A2.

- Continue sewing past the end of the A1-A2 line about 1/2″ to secure your stitches.

- Take the paper pattern to the cutting mat and place the fabric side up. Fold the A2 section back under the seam allowance you just sewed.

- But the Add-A-Quarter ruler up against the folded paper and trim the small amount of excess fabric away with your rotary cutter.

- Unfold the paper, and press the fabric A2 open.

Optional: You can place a small line of glue with the glue stick under the fabric A2 that was just pressed open to keep the fabric in place while piecing. This is a good practice to do so you don’t have to keep checking to make sure the fabric is in the correct place while it’s face down at the sewing machine.
- Place the fabric side up again on the light box and draw a small line of Elmer’s School glue just outside the A2-A3 boundary line, inside the A3 section. Place the fabric A3 piece RSD with the diagonal edge just over the glue line. Press with the iron for 2-3 seconds to set the glue.

- Repeat steps 10-13, but sew on the line that is shared between sections A2 and A3. Be sure you are starting your stitch line before the actual A2-A3 line, and sewing past the end of the line, as this will secure your stitches.

- Place a small amount of glue stick glue on the fabric side of the paper within the A3 section prior to pressing the fabric.

- Press the Fabric A3 down.

- Repeat steps 10-14 with the remaining fabric pieces A4, A5, A6, A7, and A8 to complete the body of the acorn.

- Flip the block over so the fabric side is facing down. Using a ruler, trim away the excess paper (and fabric) outside the outer lines of the block. Be sure you don’t trim away the outer line that is your 1/4″ seam allowance. Set aside this piece.

- Now take the top portion of the acorn template labeled with B1, B2, B3. This will be the stem. Follow steps 4-9 using the fabric pieces B1, B2, B3 to complete the top section. Use the same finishing method in step 20 to trim away the outer fabric, leaving the 1/4″ seam allowance around the entire section.

- Repeat step 21 with both foundation paper piecing template sections labeled C1, C2, C3 and D1, D2, D3 (these are mirror images of each other). Use the coordinating fabric pieces C1, C2, C3 and D1, D2, D3.

- Repeat step 21 with both foundation paper piecing template sections labeled E1, E2 and F1, F2 (these are mirror images of each other). Use the coordinating fabric pieces E1, E2 and F1, F2.

- Take all of the completed sections and place them as shown below.

- Take two of the completed sections E1-E2 and C1-C2-C3 and place them RSU. Secure them for sewing by placing a small line of school glue within the seam allowance, just above the line above C1-C2. Take the E1-E2 section and place it RSD on top of the C1-C2-C3 section, lining up the seam allowance edges. Press with the iron for 2-3 seconds to set the glue.

- Remove the Standard foot A and attach the 1/4″ Foot O. From the “Quilt” Menu, select stitch #2 and shorten the stitch length to 1.5. Using Foot O, put the edge of the paper flush against the quarter inch seam guide on the foot and sew directly on top of the black seam line printed on the paper. Press open.

- Repeat steps 25 and 26 with the mirror image sections F1-F2 and D1-D2-D3.
- Take the A1-A8 section and the sections completed in steps 25-27 and sew these together in the same manner as steps 25 and 26.

- Take the nearly completed acorn body and the final section B1-B2-B3 and sew together with a 1/4” seam allowance as you did in steps 25-26.

- Repeat steps 1-29 above four more times to complete five 12.5” acorn blocks.
Assembling the Table Runner
- Place the completed blocks RST and sew together with a 1/4″ seam allowance, again using the glue and iron to baste in place. I chose to alternate the direction of each block, as shown below. Carefully tear all the papers away from the fabrics. Press all seams.

- Take the two 1.5” x 60.5” pieces of Fabric B and place them RST with the longer edges of the table runner. Pin in place and sew with a 1/4” seam allowance. Press seams. Take the two 1.5” x 14.5” pieces of Fabric B and place the RST with the short edges of the table runner. Pin in place and sew together with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Press seams.

- Take one of the Pellon SF101 fusible interfacing pieces cut at 14.5” x 62.5” and apply to the wrong side of the pieced table runner top, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Fuse the remaining Pellon SF101 14.5” x 62.5” piece to the wrong side of the 14.5” x 62.5” fabric B for the back of the table runner, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Place the front of the table runner and the back RST and pin in place. Sew around the entire perimeter of the table runner, with the exception of a 6” space for turning the table runner RSO.

- Turn the table runner RSO and press the edges. Press the open unsewn edges in by 1/4″ and pin in place prior to topstitching. Switch to Foot A and select stitch #1 from the Utility menu. Use a contrasting thread to topstitch 1/8” from the outer edge all the way around the table runner.
