Midnight Blue – 1 1/2 yard
Bat Black – 1 1/4 yard
Binding – 1/2 yard
Backing – 1 3/4 yards
Cutting Instructions
From the midnight blue fabric, cut:
(12) 5″ x 5″ squares
(24) 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ squares
(6)Â 6 1/2″ x 24 1/2″ rectangles
From the bat black fabric, cut:
(12) 5″ x 5″ squares
(2) 1 1/2″ x 24 1/2″ rectangles
(2) 1 1/2″ x 72 1/2″ strips (sewn together from width of fabric strips)
(6) 6 1/2″ x 24 1/2″ approximately for bats

Assembly
Shoo Fly Quilt Blocks
Mark the backs of the 5″ midnight blue squares once from corner to corner. Lay on the 5″ bat black square right sides together.
Sew a 1/4″ from each side of the marked line. Cut apart on the drawn line.
Press and trim to 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″.
Make 24 Half Square Triangles.
Using the Half Square Triangles and midnight blue 4 1/2″ squares lay out the block in rows. Sew the rows, then sew the rows into block.
Press and trim to 12 1/2″ x 12 1/2″.
Make 6 blocks and sew them together in a row.
Bat Blocks
Prepare the bat template using your favorite applique method.
For Fusible Applique, trace the bat onto fusible adhesive and pressed to the backside of the bat black fabric. Cut out on the line, center, and press on the 6 1/2″ x 24 1/2″ midnight blue rectangle. Straight stitch along edge.
Make 6 Bat blocks. Sew into two rows of three bats each.
Assembly
Sew the bat blocks to the top and bottom of the row of Shoo Fly blocks.
Sew a 1 1/2″ x 24 1/2″ rectangle to each end of the mantel cover.
Sew a 1 1/2″ x 72 1/2″ strip to the top and bottom of the mantel cover.
Quilt as desired and bind.
