Cutting Instructions:

From the white fabric, cut:
(8) 1 5/8″ x 1 5/8″ squares
(6) 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ squares
(2) 1″ x 2 1/2″ rectangles
(16) 1″ x 1 1/2″ rectangles

From the red fabric, cut:
(6) 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ squares
(20) 1” x 1” squares

From the black fabric, cut:
(2) 2 1/2” x 2 1/2″ rectangles
(12) 1” x 1” squares

Assembly:

Flying Geese Units

Mark eight white 1 5/8″ squares in half diagonally once. Lay two white marked squares over a black 2 1/2″ square in diagonally opposite corners. Sew a quarter inch from the marked line on both sides. Cut apart and press.

Lay a white square over the corner of the black triangle. Sew a quarter inch from the marked line on both sides. Cut apart and press. Repeat with the other black triangle.

Trim Flying Geese to 1″ x 1 1/2″ rectangle. Make 8 Flying Geese (2 of them are extras. Save for block 9).

Half Square Triangles

Mark the wrong side of 6 white 1 1/2″ squares in half diagonally once. Lay a marked white square over a red 1 1/2″ square, right sides together. Sew a quarter inch from each side of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line and press half towards the red and half towards the white.

Trim unit to 1” square. Make 12.

Parallelogram Units

Mark the wrong side of a red 1” square in half diagonally once. Lay the marked red square, right sides together, on the left corner of a white 1” x 1 1/2″ rectangle with the marked line beginning in the bottom left corner.

Sew on the marked line. Trim ⅛” seam allowance and press toward the red.

Repeat for the black 1” square at the right end of the white rectangle with the marked line ending in the top right corner.

Unit measures 1” x 1 1/2″ rectangle. Make 6.

Repeat to make six more parallelograms going in the other direction. Press towards the white. Use the image below as a guide.

Trapezoid Units

Mark the wrong side of a red 1” square in half diagonally once. Lay the marked red square, right sides together, on the left corner of a white 1” x 2 1/2″ rectangle with the marked line beginning in the bottom left corner.

Sew on the marked line. Trim 1/4” seam allowance and press toward the red.

Repeat for the red 1” square at the right end of the white rectangle with the marked line ending in the bottom right corner.

Unit measures 1” x 2 1/2″ rectangle. Make 2.

Corner Flip Units

Mark the wrong side of a red 1” square in half diagonally once. Lay the marked red square, right sides together, on the left corner of a white 1” x 1 1/2″ rectangle with the marked line beginning in the bottom left corner.

Sew on the marked line. Trim 1/4” seam allowance and press towards the white. Make 2.

Repeat to make two units with the red square at the right end of the white rectangle with the marked line ending in the bottom right corner. Press towards the white.

Assembly

Use the assembly diagram below to sew the center of the block together.

Sew three Flying Geese side by side. Make 2. Sew a set of Flying Geese to each side of the block center. Press towards the center.

Using the image below as a guide, sew two Corner Flip units to each end of a Trapezoid unit. Make 2. Sew to the top and bottom of the block center to complete the block.

Block measures 4 1/2″ square unfinished.
