Combine these techniques and multiply the fun. Play with bubbles, cups, rubber cement, masking fluid, air, gravity, stamps, and ink to produce a collection of colorful paintings. For nearly 30 years, Katie has produced high quality contemporary art quilts that have been coveted and collected by a broad range of admirers. From her early beginnings as a painter dabbling in traditional quiltmaking, her work has evolved from structured mandalas and mind-blowing dimensional pieces to very painterly landscapes executed with the finest fabrics and most creative stitching techniques. Katieʼs easy, energetic manner has made her a very popular teacher and lecturer. When not in residence at her studio in Fortuna, she travels the world presenting her contemporary quilting theories and techniques to classes, not only in North America, but in Europe, the Far East, Australia, and New Zealand. A prolific author, Katie shares her enthusiasm for the art of creative quilting through her numerous books and many classes.

WOW!! I was an educator and author of Mathematics textbooks for a total of 38 years. I KNOW a GREAT TEACHER when I see one. I have enjoyed just watching Katie go through the process in each of her video courses. There is never a wasted word, her instruction is FOCUSED, COHERENT with just the right amount of RIGOR. She is encouraging, thoughtful and generous in her guidance and explanations. I only wish she had more courses available on this site. I’ve searched a lot of online courses and she is by far the best I’ve seen. Her esthetic speaks to me. The only thing I might disagree with is her choice of ‘right brain music’. To anyone interested in learning how to bridge art and textiles PLEASE take one of Katie’s classes. I am completely new to the detailed process of creating a free motion appliqued (turned edges) quilt. Her suggestions and demonstration helped ease my anxieties.

I enjoyed this class, the teaching and demonstrations were clear and concise. A wonderful way to design your own quilts. But I really did not enjoy the way the quilt was put together with the turned edges, using starch, stitching the edges with zigzag stitch before the free motion quilting was done. When I try this method of creating an art quilt I would rather use raw edge with a light fusible and then free motion , Eliminating the need for turning under the edges and anchoring them with zig zag stitched. Far less tedious and time consuming. It would have been quicker to just do needleturn applique . Otherwise I would give this class a 4 out of 5

Excellent class. I was intimidated at the thought of water color painting but I had so much fun and have some good cropped pieces for future quilts. Instructions were really clear and I look forward to another class with Katie PM.

This class covers a wealth of material. Students learn the manageable progression of making an original quilt from simple art experimentation. The basics of design are mentioned almost as an aside as the process is explored. This class does not end with the final completed project but opens doors to countless variations on a theme and can even be used as a springboard to further personal experimentation and the making of art quilts.
