Fabric Requirements:
Background – 6 yards
Purple – 2 yards
Orange – 2 yards
Lt. Purple – 3/4 yard
Binding – 1 yard
Backing 108″ fabric – 3 1/4 yards
Cutting Instructions:
For the Background fabric, cut:
(10) 12″ x 12″ squares
(6) 23″ x 23″ squares
(2) 23½” x 23½” squares
(4) 11½” x 11½” squares
(4) 22½” x 11½” rectangles
For the Purple fabric, cut:
(8) 12″ x 12″ squares
(4) 23″ x 23″ squares
For the Orange fabric, cut:
(6) 12″ x 12″ square
(1) 23½” x 23½” square
(4) 11½” x 11½” squares
(1) 22½” x 22½” square
For the Lt. Purple fabric, cut:
(1) 23½” x 23½” square
Unit A:
– make 4
Need:
- (6) 12″ x 12″ background squares
- (4) 12″ x 12″ purple squares
- (2) 12″ x 12″ orange squares
- (4) 11½” x 11½” orange squares
Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the backside of each of the 12″ background squares.
Lay the marked 12″ background square on an unmarked 12″ square, right sides together. Assemble as follows:
- 4 Background and Purple 12″ squares yields 8 HSTs.
- 2 Background and Orange 12″ squares yields 4 HSTs.
Sew a 1/4″ seam on each side of the diagonal line.
Cut on the diagonal line.
Press the half square triangles and trim evenly to 11½”.
To make Unit A, arrange the half square triangles with the 11½” orange square as shown above.
Press the unit and trim evenly to 22½”.
Make 4.
Unit B:
– make 8
Need:
- (4) 23″ x 23″ background squares
- (4) 23″ x 23″ purple squares
Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the backside of each of the 23″ background squares.
Lay the marked 23″ background square on an unmarked 23″ purple square, right sides together. Assemble as follows:
- 4 Background and Purple 23″ squares yields 8 HSTs.
Sew a 1/4″ seam on each side of the diagonal line.
Cut on the diagonal line.
Press the half square triangles and trim evenly to 22½”.
Make 8.
Unit C:
– make 4
Need:
- (2) 23½” x 23½” background squares
- (1) 23½” x 23½” light purple squares
- (1) 23½” x 23½” orange squares
Draw two diagonal lines (makes an X) on the back of two 23½” background squares.
Lay a marked background square on an unmarked 23½” light purple square.
Sew a 1/4 seam on each side of one diagonal line.
Cut on both diagonal lines and press.
Repeat this process with an unmarked 23½” orange square.
To make Unit C, match the quarter square halves as shown above and sew together.
Press the unit and trim evenly to 22½”.
Make 4.
Unit D:
– make 4
Need:
- (4) 12″ x 12″ orange squares
- (4) 11½” x 11½” background squares
- (2) 23″ x 23″ background squares
Cut two 12″ orange squares diagonally to make two triangles from each square.
Sew an orange triangle to the top and side of an 11½” background square.
Trim the resulting triangle so the seam allowance along the long side of the triangle is 1/4″ from the corner of the square.
Cut two 23″ background squares diagonally once to make two triangles from each square.
To make unit D, sew the pieced triangle to the background triangle.
Press the unit and trim evenly to 22½”.
Make 4.
Unit E:
– make 4
Need:
- (4) 12″ x 12″ background squares
- (4) 12″ x 12″ purple squares
- (4) 22½” x 11½” background rectangles
Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the backside of each of the 12″ background squares.
Lay the marked 12″ background square on an unmarked 12″ purple square, right sides together. Assemble as follows:
- 4 Background and Purple 12″ squares yields 8 HSTs.
Sew a 1/4″ seam on each side of the diagonal line.
Cut on the diagonal line.
Press the half square triangles and trim evenly to 11½”.
To make Unit E, arrange the half square triangles with the 22½” x 11½” background rectangle as shown above.
Press the unit and trim evenly to 22½”.
Make 4.
Quilt Assembly:
Following the diagram below, sew the units together along with the 22½” x 22½” orange square to make the quilt.
