Remember the colors that drew you in when you began your creative journey? What about now? Has your color confidence grown?
Go through old pictures or your fabric stash and take a look at the colors in your first projects. Have your color preferences changed through the years? Sometimes my favorites change from month to month!
Create a block that shows off your quilting colors through the years. Here are some suggestions:
- Take your scraps and rotary cutter to the cutting table and trim strips from scraps of old projects or fabrics that represent the colors of your beginning quilts. Sew the strips together making a linear progression of your color preferences through the years. Trim the block to a square or rectangular shape. Don’t worry if it looks more like a border than a block!
- Cut a foundation piece of fabric the size of a block you want to make (with 1/4″ seam allowances added). Begin at the center and foundation piece the fabrics to the foundation. Start with your early colors in the center and work your way around the center so that the outside edges of the block represent your recent work.
- Make a log cabin block. Collect your colors and count them. Create a log cabin block with enough strips to include each fabric. Here is a log cabin block with 96 strips. Each strip finishes to 1/4″ so cut them 3/4″. The block finishes at 12″.

Use any of the ideas mentioned above, or come up with your own way to create a visual timeline of your quilting journey in color! It will be a great addition to your Quilt Story quilt!
