William Morris Rock Star?

Are you crazy about the fabric designs of William Morris? I am, and have beenĀ  since their introduction to my quilting world about 20 years ago. His classic and yet innovative designs are as popular today as they were in the late 19th century.

Morris lived from 1834-1896. He was a leadingĀ  English textile designer, artist, writer, and political figure ofĀ  his time. He was one of the founders of the English Arts & Crafts movement.Ā  The Arts & Crafts movementĀ  stood for traditional craftsmanship using simple forms and often applied medieval, romantic or folk styles of decoration. It was essentially anti-industrial.

The fabric designs of William Morris reflect many of the these elements, combining folk art with elegant medieval illuminated-style designs all in one fabric. The colors reflect nature while at the same time use rich, deep burgundies, golds, and silver. It is no wonder that these timeless designs are so popular, still.

What wouldĀ  William Morris think about today’s quilters? I think he would approve of us. That is unless he attended a quilt show. Can you imagine how he would be mobbed? I can pictureĀ  quilters screaming andĀ  throwing their fat quarters at him. Why, he would be a regular rock star!
