Popular Piecing Techniques – Survey Results

Whether by machine or by hand, there always seems to be something new to try for piecing patchwork. We gathered a list of techniques and asked which you had tried. With over 2000 quilters responding, the results are in!

Picking from a list of techniques, we asked you to note which ones you have used. Here they are in order of popularity:

  • Chain Piecing – 95% of respondents
  • Strip Piecing – 94% of respondents
  • Foundation Paper Piecing – 81% of respondents
  • Stitch & Flip – 67% of respondents
  • Curved Piecing – 66% of respondents
  • Quilt As You Go – 52% of respondents

The least tried techniques were Seminole and Improv Piecing.

 

What most influences your decision when selecting a piecing technique for a specific project?

  • 2 out of 5 quilters said precision was most important, with time being the least important.

Used Totally Stable (by Sulky) stabilizer to draft and join 12 30-degree wedges for a large center medallion quilt
Using a tiny dot of Roxanne’s Glue Baste It (near the edge of the fabric, careful not to get near the stitch line) instead of pinning pieces to match points and corners better than pinning. I was skeptical, but tried it and it works great. Seems much quicker.
Using two 2.5″ sqs. to be the “leaders” under the needle while I am actually piecing bigger blocks for a quilt top. When all of the bigger blocks are sewn, I collected the small shapes, cut of extra threads, and pressed their seam to one side. I put two small shapes together while I finished longer seams on the larger blocks that were forming.
